                             Study Activities #5 (chapter 6)

In twenty years in the future, I think that more people will speak a second language because the immigration population is growing and the community composition is making it more important that employees be bilingual individual in order to meet the needs of the community and keep their business growing.  Trade and profit are important and require the communication among different cultures as well. For example, when I go to the corner store and the employer greets me on my language it makes feel comfortable.

The classroom will be equipped round chairs so the instructor will be able to face each the students. No charts paper display in the classroom. Each student will have a computer to get information and translate the subject contents and the assignments. Instructors will use smart boards that will have even more capabilities than they do now. I think with daily life so immersed in technology, code will become a universal language.

The emphasis on requiring students and individuals to learn the majority language in the community or city will be unnecessary as regardless of spoken or dominant language, students will be able to communicate their learning through code and technology. Therefore rather than focus on students becoming proficient in a specific spoken language, there will be more emphasis on them becoming technology/code savvy and literate. Code is much more systematic and will be easier to teach/learn and there are not all of the exceptions and variations that exist in spoken languages.

Academic success will depend on each individual’s, access to technology, needs and strengths. It will not be determined by how long they are living in a community or exposed to a language. Language proficiency will not be the sole indicator of future success. So no matter where they live or what language they speak they will have access to the content through technology and its universal language.
There will still be many reasons to learn a language or languages for everyone. Languages form cultural ties, build relationships, and oral speech is integral to us as social beings.  So people who speak more than one language will still have more opportunities and advantages.

With this shift, standardized tests will be used to measure students academic achievement, but they will be on technology and/or using code.   This will create a truly valid test as students will be able to use any language (through computer translation abilities) to record their responses and demonstrate understanding.
